Pioneers of Brazilian silent cinema, they set up the production company Pernambuco Film at the beginning of the ’20s, producing a series of documentaries about the capital of Pernambuco. Falangola was born in 1879 in Rome. After having fought in World War I, he supposedly brought the first film camera to Pernambuco. Together with his partner Cambière and other figures of the period – such as Ary Severo, Jota Soares and Gentil Roiz, all directors of some of the first Brazilian fiction films –, he brought to life the period that Brazilian film historians have referred to as the Recife Cycle.

Born in 1906 in Sisak, Croacia. He started his career in Austria, creating Yugoslav versions for German and Austrian films. In the 1930’s, he worked in studios in Vienna and Berlin. With the end of World War II, after losing his entire family, he decided to immigrate to Brazil. He first worked at Cinelândia Filmes. In 1955, he started working for Herbert Richers, having directed 18 films; mostly comedies with actors such as Grande Otelo and Ronald Golias. He has directed 11 films with Aragão’s comedy group Os Trapalhões, such as O Trapalhão nas Minas do Rei Salomão (1977) and Os Saltimbancos Trapalhões (1981). He ventured into many genres, such as the erotic drama As Borboletas Também Amam (1979). At the age of 81, he directed his last film: Os Fantasmas Trapalhões (1987). He died in 1993, at the age of 87.

Born in Atlanta, and today resident in Los Angeles (U.S.A.), he majored in history at Stanford University and in film production by the Southern California School. He began his career working as a script writer for Disney studios. In 1995, he directed a fiction medium-length film Shooting Creek. The documentary Revolution OS is his first feature.

Nasceu em 1950. Formou-se diretor de fotografia na Escola de Cinema, Teatro e Televisão de Lodz. Entre 1978 e 1984 foi diretor de fotografia de 20 documentários. Dirigiu diversos curtas-metragens, incluindo "Superheavy"(84), "A View"(84), "A Speedboat to Heaven"(85), "The Skalski`s Circus"(86), "The Monastery"(86), "A Lump of Sugar"(87, premiado como o melhor documentário do Festival de Curtas de Tampere) e "I was the Wehrmacht General"(88). "The Abnormal " é seu primeiro longa-metragem.

Jack Youngelson - Writer and producer of documentaries presented on TV broadcasters in the U.S. and in the U.K., such as HBO, Bravo, the BBC, and Channel Four. In the last four years, he contributed to Moxie Firecracker Films with three documentaries. In 2002, he wrote and co-produced The Nazi Officer’s Wife, a documentary directed by Liz Garbus and that was part of the selection for the 27th Mostra. Together with director Rory Kennedy, he wrote and produced Indian Point: Imagining the Unimaginable (2004) and Ten Days That Unexpectedly Changed America: The Homestead Strike (2006). Peter Sutherland - Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in the U.S. His first documentary as director, Pedal (2002), was already presented on the Sundance Channel. He was photography director for Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator, awarded prizes at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, among other work for TV. In 2004, he published his first book of photographs, Autograf: New York City`s Graffiti Writers.

Seu primeiro longa-metragem foi "Big Shots", 1982. É um premiadíssimo diretor israelense que faturou com "Sobre o Oceano" os prêmios de melhor filme, direção, roteiro, atriz, ator, atriz coadjuvante, montagem, trilha sonora e direção de arte na Israeli Academy, em 1991.

OLIVIER DUCASTEL He studied at the IDHEC Film School and holds a diploma in Film Studies and Research from the University of Paris III. After pursuing an editing career (he was Sabine Mamou`s assistant on Jacques Demy`s Three Places for the 26th), he wrote and directed Le Goût de Plaire, a short musical. In 1998, Ducastel and Jacques Martineau carried off their attempt to make a musical about AIDS, Jeanne and the Perfect Guy. JACQUES MARTINEAU An Arts graduate, he is a lecturer at the Université de Paris X, at Nanterre. Jeanne and the Perfect Guy was his first screenplay, which he went on to co-direct with Olivier Ducastel. Their film Funny Felix, featuring Sami Bouajila, was released in France in April 2000.

Born in Minaeh, Iran, in 1960. He studied film and TV directing in Tehran. He was Abbas Kiarostami’s assistant director in Under the Olive Trees, winner of the Critic’s Prize at the 18th Mostra). The White Balloon (1995, 19th Mostra), his first feature film as a director, was awarded with the Golden Camera at the Cannes Film Festival. He has also directed titles such as The Mirror (1997, 22nd Mostra, in which he was also member of the International Jury), The Circle (2000, 24th Mostra), winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, Crimson Gold (2003, 28th Mostra), winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. In 2010, he was convicted to six years in prison and was forbidden to film or leave Iran for two decades under the accusation of doing advertising against Iranian government. One year later, Panahi directed This Is Not a Film, shown at the 35th Mostra and awarded with the Silver Bear for best screenplay at the Berlinale. He also signed the direction of Closed Curtain (2013, 37th Mostra), Taxi Tehran (2015), best film at Berlinale and 3 Faces (2018). The filmmaker was honored with Humanity Award at 42nd Mostra, in 2018.

Born on 1973, started out after his graduation. Starting out as a production assistant, Jai went on to be an editor, an assistant director for television commercials and an agency producer. After training in various functions from 1994 to 2001, he set up Dream Cuts in 2001 as a one stop shop for production and creative film services. As director at Dream Cuts, Tank made several corporate, documentary and public service films. Madholal Keep Walking is his first feature film.

Born in Barcelona in 1936, he majored as a teacher of music. He directed several short films and, in 1963, his first feature, The Happy Sixties. Jaime Camino was part of the well-known School of Barcelona that, inspired in the French Nouvelle Vague, tried to renew Spanish cinema in the midst of the Franco dictatorship. He also directed Mi Professora Particular (1972), and The Long Winter (1992), among others.

He was born on 17th July 1981 in Graz, Austria. In 2001 he made his first short film, Trübe Aussichten, and began studying at the Munich School of Television and Film, completing his degree in 2007. In addition to making films, he has been involved in numerous exhibitions with his paintings and sculptures, he has performed as a singer, musician and composer in several formations, and he also works as an actor. In 2003 he and the actress Rachel Honegger founded the film production company mojo:pictures, which is dedicated to young filmmakers. After the short film Lies and Letters (2005), he directed his first feature film All the Invisible Things. It won as Best Feature Film at the 2007 Diagonale Film Festival, in Graz (Austria).

Stern is a screenwriter, director and producer of films and Broadway plays. Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1937. Jan Harlan joined Stanley Kubrick in 1969 as a researcher for the director’s unfinished Napoleon film project. He was the assistant producer for Kubrick’s next film, A Clockwork Orange (1971, 35th Mostra). Four years later, he became Kubrick’s executive producer on Barry Lyndon (1975), The Shining (1980), Full Metal Jacket (1987) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999). After Kubrick’s death in 1999, he worked as an executive producer for Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), a project envisioned by Kubrick. After that, he traveled across Mexico and Peru, where he immersed in shaman culture and returned in 2004 with the movie Blueberry His movie Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky (2009) closed the Cannes Festival in the same year.

Entre as tumultuadas filmagens e interrupções, volta à Europa para rodar O Estado das Coisas (The State of Things), em 1982. Sem que pudesse imaginar, esse filme se tornaria um símbolo de resistência contra a ditadura militar brasileira, depois de ganhar o Leão de Ouro no Festival de Veneza. No dia 20 de outubro de 1984, com mais de mil pessoas lotando a sessão de O Estado das Coisas no Cine Metrópole, cinema infelizmente desaparecido, chegam os agentes da Polícia Federal com uma ordem para interromper a 8ª Mostra Internacional de Cinema. Em O Estado das Coisas, uma equipe de cinema está em Portugal motivada pela própria autobiografia de Wenders, com as dificuldades de um cineasta em realizar o seu filme sem conseguir se livrar da opressão do produtor. Tudo começou um mês antes da 8ª Mostra ser inaugurada, quando partimos ao desafio ao governo em seu último ano de ditadura, processar a União e obtendo vitória judicial para poder, pela primeira vez em oito anos de existência, fazer um festival sem submeter a seleção dos filmes à censura prévia. A Mostra reagia por todos esses anos de humilhação. Uma semana depois, o governo federal cassaria a liminar e interromperia a Mostra para o espanto de todo o mundo. E justamente no curso da projeção de O Estado das Coisas... Li com voz embargada e lágrima nos olhos, diante de uma platéia espantada, a decisão judicial de acabar com a Mostra livre censura. Enquanto isso, no auge da criação, Wim Wenders se refaria do impacto do filme americano anterior, ganhando a Palma de Ouro em Cannes de 1984 com Paris, Texas. Impecável modernidade com roteiro de Sam Shepard sobre buscas e perdições, interpretações de Harry Dean Stanton e Natassja Kinski e música de Ry Cooder. O admirável cineasta-cinéfilo leva-nos ao Japão pouco depois com o diário-documentário Tokyo-Ga, em forma de peregrinação e reverência ao grande mestre Yasujiro Ozu. Foi Wenders quem abriu em 1985 os olhos de novas gerações ao cinema do grande mestre japonês. Observamos na obra de Wim Wenders a sua capacidade de despojamento, sempre se fazendo parecer muito menor diante dos ícones de sua (nossa) formação cultural. Com ele aprendemos sobre o grande poder motriz da humildade. Ao percorrer cenários japoneses e seus rituais tão bizarros quanto fascinantes, Wenders comporta-se com a disciplina de um pupilo e faz notar o quanto japonês e universal é o inestimável legado cinematográfico de Ozu. A admiração por Wim Wenders foi crescendo a cada revelação e a cada surpresa de seus filmes. O mais emocionante de todos dessa fase foi certamente a sua antecipada demolição do Muro de Berlim com Asas do Desejo (Wings of Desire, 1987). Anjos singelos atrevem-se a ignorar a existência do abominável muro e a sobrevoam indiferentes às fronteiras, atrás das almas que devem guardar. Asas do Desejo foi, merecidamente, o Prêmio do Público da 12ª Mostra, em 1987, e inseriu-se imediatamente na galeria dos seus filmes para sempre cultuados. A galeria de músicos convidados para os seus filmes é imensa - Ry Cooder, Daniel Lanois, Willie Nelson, U2, Bono, Nick Cave, BAP, Wolfgang Niedecken, Ronnee Blakley e Lou Reed, além de conseguir o feito mundial de resgatar talentos em grupo como em Buena Vista Social Club, de 1998. Com esse documentário musical Wenders deu uma extraordinária sobrevida a um grupo extraordinariamente talentoso de músicos cubanos. Ou como fez ao resgatar a história de três bluesmen marcantes - Blind Willie Johnson (1902-1947), Skip James (1902-1969) e J.B. Lenoir (1929-1967), em A Alma de um Homem (The Soul of a Man, 2003), seu longa dentro da série Blues, e que novamente venceu o Prêmio do Público, na 27ª Mostra. Wim Wenders justifica a escolha dos três bluesmen por identificar neles características comuns: “estavam à frente de seu tempo, escreveram suas próprias músicas, eram cantores e instrumentistas completos e morreram desconhecidos e esquecidos”. Bastava isto para atribuir o Prêmio Humanidade da 32ª Mostra Internacional de Cinema a Wim Wenders. Ele enriquece com seus gestos e filmes a galeria dos indicados anteriores ao Prêmio Humanidade da Mostra, que foram Manoel de Oliveira, Eduardo Coutinho e Amos Gitai. He directed several prize-winning documentaries such as Alexandrie le Magnifique and L´Énigme des Nazcas Jean Lemire Jean Lemire - Is a biologist and has produced documentaries since 1987. In 2001, he founded Glacialis Productions and made series such as Mission Arctique and Mission Baleines.

Born in Antheit, Belgium,  in 1946. He graduated at the Arts and Diffusion Institute in Brussels. Libon worked as image reporter for the documentary magazine A Suivre and created, in 1985, with Marco Lamensch, a documentary series Strip-Tease, which was be broadcasted for nearly 20 years on France and Belgian channels. His first feature, So Help Me God (2018), directed along with Yves Hinant, won the Jury special mention at San Sebastián Film Festival.

Born in Paris France in 1894. Son of the impressionist painter Pierre Auguste Renoir, he was a filmmaker, screenwriter, actor, and producer. As a film director, he became known for his films of Poetic Realism, a French film movement of the 1930s, such as The Lower Depths (1936), Grand Illusion (1937) and The Rules of the Game (1939). In the 1940’s he directed films in Hollywood such as Swamp Water (1941), This Land Is Mine (1943) and The Woman on the Beach (1947). He also directed films like The River (1951), Paris Does Strange Things (1956) and Le Caporal Épinglé (1962). In 1974, he received an honorary Academy Award for career accomplishment. He died in 1979 at the age of 84.

Born in Paris, France, in 1905. Son of anarchist militant Eugeni Bonaventura de Vigo i Sallés, known as Miguel Almareyda, he lost his father at the age of 12. He directed two shorts: Nice (1930) and Taris, Roi de L`eau (1931), a motion study of swimmer Jean Taris. Two years after he make the medium-length Zero for Conduct (1933) a subversive depiction of an authoritarian boarding school. The film was banned by the French government until after the II World War. L’Atalante, his only full-length film, was edited by the producers and released with the title Le Chaland qui Passe. Jean Vigo died in Paris in 1934, at the age of 29, of complications of tuberculosis.

C.R.A.Z.Y. was judged the best Canadian film at the Toronto Film Festival, was awarded the special prize from a young jury at the Gijón Film Festival and shared the Prize from the Public at the AFI (American Film Institute) Fest, all of these in 2005. The film was also awarded ten out of the twelve 2006 Genie Prizes (the Canadian Oscar) for which it was indicated: for film, directing, actor (Michel Côté), supporting actress (Danielle Proulx), original script, editing, sound, sound editing, art directing, and costume design.

Born in Fenyang, Shanxi province, in China, in 1970. One of the most important filmmaker today, he made, among others, the features Platform (2000), The World (2004), awarded with the Critics Prize at the 29th Mostra, Still Life (2006), winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, 24 City (2008), A Touch of Sin (2013) and Ash Is Purest White (2018), all presented at Mostra. During the 31st Mostra, in 2007, the filmmaker came to São Paulo to present a retrospective of his work, and at the 38th Mostra, he was honored with the Leon Cakoff Prize. In 2020, in the 44th Mostra, Jia Zhangke signs the art of the edition’s poster and also shows the short Visit (2020) and the feature film Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue (2020).

Director, writer, producer and actor, Cummings lives in Los Angeles. Since 1990 he has been working as a cameraman and cinematographer in television series, documentaries, advertisements and short films. As a film director, he has worked on various projects, mostly in the documentary field, like Pinturas a la Bestia (1990) and A Table, a Chair and a Bed (1992), co-directed by Cesc Gay. His first long film documentary was the awarded The Oligor Brothers (2004).

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1932. Filmmaker and screenwriter, was one of the main names of the Brazilian film movement Cinema Novo. He did internships at the Institute des Hautes Études Cinématographiques de Paris (Idhec) and at the French Cinematheque. Original artist and a critic of the contrasts of the country, had as one of its main characteristics the praise to Brazilian literature. He made, among others, Garrincha - Hero of the Jungle (1963), The Priest and the Girl (1966), Macunaima (1969) and Os Inconfidentes (1972). In 2006, the 30th Mostra made a retrospective of his films. He died in 1988 at the age of 56.

Won four Academy awards for best director, for The Informer (1935), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), How Green Was My Valley (1941, 34th Mostra) and The Quiet Man (1952, 34th Mostra). Acclaimed specially for his work in the western genre, he also directed Stagecoach (1939, 34th Mostra), The Searchers (1956, 34th Mostra) and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962, 18th Mostra), all three starring John Wayne. He died in Palm Desert, California, in 1973 at the age of 79.

Between 1936 and 1945, he lived in the United States, where he made several propaganda films, but left the country under suspicion of communism. He then worked at various studios in Eastern Europe. He had his most important films, such as The Bridge (1928), Industrial Symphony (1931), The Spanish Earth (1937), and The 400 Million (1938), screened in the 15th Mostra. José Corbacho Born in 1965, in Barcelona. Actor, director, script writer and producer, he began his career as an actor in the nineties. He has directed television series and programs. Tapas is his first feature. Juan Cruz Director, writer, and producer, he began his career writing for television. He directed his first feature, El Olor de las Manzanas, in 1999. Tapas was the winner of the prize for best script at the Montreal Festival, 2005. The film also won the prizes for best film, best actress (Elvira Minguez), and prize from the public at the Málaga Festival, Spain.

JOSÉ DOMINGO RIVERA
In 2001, Rivera was sent to Easter Island to work as a lawyer. He later studied documentary development in New York and attended the master in documentary and society at ESCAC, in Catalunya. He directed the documentaries En la Mirada de um Hombre Común (2007) and En Enero Quizás (2008), the latter codirected by Diogo Costa. Since 2011, he has lived and worked in Valparaíso.

JOSÉ EMÍLIO RONDEAU
Born in Rio de Janeiro, in 1956. A pioneer in creating and directing videoclips in the country. Outstanding among his films are clips of the Paralamas do Sucesso, Alceu Valença, Lobão, and the prize-winning "Tempo Perdido" from Legião Urbana. He lived in Los Angeles from 1987 until 2004 and wrote the script, produced, and directed programs on cinema for TV Globo and the paid TV channel Telecine, in addition to co-productions with the Independent Film Channel (USA) and the French La 13ème network. 1972 is his first feature. Ana Maria Bahiana, co-script-writer, co-producer, and wife to José Emílio Rondeau was a journalist in the United States and, therefore, part of the foreign press that vote yearly in awarding the Golden Globe Prize. She edited the Almanaque Anos 70.

José Filipe Costa

Filmmaker and lecturer, he studied cinema at the Royal College of Art, in London. Costa has taught at several institutions, such as Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ). He is also the author of the book Power to the Cinema!, from 2002. The filmography of the director includes fictional shorts, such as The Case of J. (2017), and documentary feature films, like In Between Walls (2002), directed in partnership with João Ribeiro, and Red Line (2011).

JOSÉ FONSECA COSTA
Nasceu em Caala, Angola, em 1933. Freqüentou a Faculdade de Direito de Lisboa nos anos 50. Depois de estagiar com o cineasta italiano Michelangelo Antonioni, dirigiu curtas e publicidade. Antes disso, atuou ainda como crítico de cinema e tradutor das obras do cineasta soviético Serguei Eisenstein. "O Recado", de 1970, foi seu primeiro longa. O segundo, "Os Demônios de Alcácer-Kibir (seleção da 1ª Mostra), repercutiu internacionalmente por premonir o fim do salazarismo em Portugal. Seus filmes seguintes foram "Kilas, O Mau da Fita"(4ª Mostra) e "Sem Sombra de Pecado"(7ª Mostra). "A Mulher do Próximo" é o sexto longa da sua carreira.

JOSÉ FRAZÃO E ZECA PIRES
José Frazão Studied Cinema at the Universidade Federal da Bahia and began by making shorts. Moved to Rio de Janeiro and worked as an assistant director before directing his first feature film, J.S. Brown, o Último Herói de Gibi. His following film was a semi-fictional documentary, Vento Sul, a prize –winner at the Mannheim Festival (Germany). Another feature, O Mistério do Colégio Brasil, won the popular jury’s prize of best film at the Natal Festival. Zeca Pires José Henrique Nunes Pires, or Zeca Pires, as he is professionally known, was born in Florianópolis. In partnership with Norberto Depizzolati, made the short Manhã (1989) and the documentary Farra do Boi (1992). Returned to this theme with Ponte Hercílio Luz, Patrimônio da Humanidade (1996), followed by making the short Ilhas. Worked as an assistant to Cacá Diegues and Sylvio Back.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1958. He attended courses in drama, theater directing, and cinema directing. He also studied business management at the University of Buenos Aires. From 1982 until 1990, he acted in several theater plays, national and foreign films, television and radio programs. He began to direct and to write theater plays in 1985 and videos in 1990. He also formed the S.U.A.R. S.R.L., a company for audiovisuals and musical shows, theater plays, exhibitions, institutional videos and publicity campaigns. In 2000, he made his first feature, Cien Años de Perdón, Prize for Best Film at the Gavá Film Festival in Spain. In 2006, he finished Final da Obra, a documentary on theater director Ricardo Bartís.

Born in João Pessoa, Paraiba, in 1945. Director, producer, and script writer, amongst other features, he made: A Maldição do Sanpaku (1992), Who Killed Pixote? (1996), O Chamado de Deus (2000), and Two Lost in a Dirty Night (2002), selection for the 26th Mostra. The director is part of the 29th Mostra also with the film Lust for Power.

Nascido em 1952, na Cidade do México, José Luis García Agraz estreou como diretor em 1979, com o curta Patricio, vencedor do prêmio Ariel de Melhor Curta de Ficção. Em 1982, filmou seu primeiro longa, Nocaut. Também diretor de TV, García fez recentemente uma série de TV biográfica sobre Emiliano Zaparta e a série televisiva Tony Tijuana.

Nasceu em Salamanca em 1941. Estudou Direito, Sociologia e Direção de Cinema, em Madri. Escreveu livros infantis antes de trabalhar como roteirista e diretor de séries para a televisão espanhola. Lançou seu primeiro longa em 75.Também dirigiu a peça "O Beijo da Mulher Aranha", de Puig. "As Trutas", sua comédia de humor negro, de 1977, foi destaque na programação da 2ª Mostra. "El Vuelo de la Paloma" é seu décimo quarto longa-metragem.

He was born in 1960, in Barcelona. He teaches at the University Pompeu Fabra and has made several shorts. His feature debut was Los Motivos de Berta: Fantasía de Pubertad (1985). Afterwards he directed two documentaries Innisfree and City Life, both in 1990. He directed another fiction feature, Tren de Sombras (1997), and then back to the documental genre with En Construcción (2001), best documentary at the 2002 Goya Awards and Special Jury Prize and Critics Award at the San Sebastián Film Festival.

Was born in Brussels, Belgium, in 1973. As a child, he lived in Spain for six years. He studied Film in Belgium. Since 1997, he has directed shot films such as Circus (1997) and Maestro (1998). His first feature documentary, Niños (2002), portrays the exiled children during Spanish Civil War. He has also directed the documentary Aguaviva: El abrazo de la tierra (2005).

José Luis Torres Leiva is a Chilean filmamaker born in 1975. He has made a considerable amount of shorts and independent videos. In the year 2003 he received a scholarship granted by Fundación Andes for the creation of the documentary Ningún Lugar en Ninguna Parte that has been selected in several film festivals. He was also awarded as Best Diretor in the VIII Santiago Documentaries Festival, FIDOCS 2004. His 35mm short Obreras saliendo de la fabrica was selected in several film festivals. El Cielo, la Tierra y la Lluvia is his first feature film, for which he received the Fundación Carolina 2003 scholarship in Madri, Spain. In 2005 he received the Hubert Bals Fund for his second feature Verano.

Born in Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1963. He graduated in economy and his first contact with audiovisual was in the 1980’s, also in Belo Horizonte, making works of video art. In 1992, he moved to Rio de Janeiro and began his career on TV Globo. Since then, he has been dedicated to the direction of soap operas and miniseries, such as Tropical Paradise (2007), Brazil Avenue (2012), and The Party (2014). Whirlpool is his first feature film.

Como diretor, Fernandez realizou dois curtas-metragens: El Drogadicto e Stanislacsky Sube Al Sétimo, além de atuar como produtor em nove produções espanholas.

When he was 12, his parents gave him a super-8 camera and started to make short videos. His first feature was Adventurer`s Fate (1958). During a career that spans over 50 years, he has directed dozens of films, including the trilogy At Midnight I Will Take Your Soul (1964, 31st. Mostra), This Night I’ll Possess Your Corpse (1967) and Embodiment of Evil (2008), all on exhibition at the 39th Mostra.

Entre 1976 e 1982 filma também na França. Um mestre incontestável do cinema com obras marcantes e controversas, entre os quais "O Criado" (63), "Modesty Blaise"(66), "O Mensageiro"(70 - Palma de Ouro em Cannes), e "Don Giovanni" (79).

Josh and Benny Safdie were born and raised in New York City, under the eye of their father’s Video 8 camera. In high school, the Brothers met Alex Kalman and started Red Bucket Films. Over the years the two have collaborated on many shorts. This conversation bleeds onto their other work, Benny with his photography, and Josh with his drawings and sculptures. Their work has been on display at many international festivals including the Director’s Fortnight in Cannes, where premiered Benny’s short film The Acquaintances of a Lonely John (2008) and Josh’s first feature film, The Pleasure of Being Robbed (2008).

First film directed by JT Petty, Soft for Digging was made when he was only 21 years old, completed at a cost of only US$ 6.000 and was his graduating project at New York University. He made several short films and is today working on routines for videogames. For next year, he is planning for Mimic: Sentinel, also a horror film about a boy of 24 who spends life within the confines of a minute apartment.

Juan Alejandro Ramirez was born in Arequipa in Peru. He studied anthropology in the capital, Lima, and then obtained a Fullbright scholarship that made it possible for him to travel to the U.S. where he worked as a photographer. He studied cinema in New York where he produced, photographed, edited, and directed several documentaries such as Zimbabwe: Nuts for Bolts (1988), CAPS: A Peace Plan (1989), Made by Hand (1990), All and Nothing (1993) and I`m a Yovo (1995).

Nasceu em Madri em 1922. Formou-se primeiro como engenheiro agrônomo. E foi no Ministério da Agricultura, em 1946, que teve seu primeiro contato com o cinema documental. Problemas políticos impediram a sua diplomação em cinema nos anos seqüentes. "Comicos", de 53, foi o seu longa de estréia. Em 55, "Muerte de un Ciclista" recebeu o Prêmio da Crítica no Festival de Cannes. Em 1961 foi o produtor de "Viridiana", dirigido por Buñuel. Com a assinatura de mais de 20 roteiros e direções, acabou se consagrando como um dos melhores cineastas do cinema espanhol.

The director is one of the great exponents of Cuban cinema today. Tabio and Director Tomás Gutiérrez Alea were responsible for inserting the Cuban cinema on the international circuits with Fresa y Chocolate, in 1993. Tabio began his career in 1982, as script writer for Alea in the film Hasta Cierto Punto. As from then, he wrote and directed all of his films: Se Permuta (1983), Dolly Back (1986), Plaff (1988), El Elefante y la Bicicleta (1992), Guantanamera (1994) and this Lista de Espera.

Juan Pablo Rebella e Pablo Stoll Born in Montevideo in 1974, Rebella and Pablo majored in Communication Studies from Uruguay’s Catholic University. Since then, they have worked together as script writers and directors. Their first feature was 25 Watts (2001), awarded for Best Film at the Rotterdam Festival, Best Début Film at the Havana Festival and Best Latin Film at the Gramado Festival. Whisky is their second film and won the FIPRESCI prize at the Un Certain Regard exhibition at the Cannes Festival. It also won the Best Latin Film award from the public and official jury at the 2004 Gramado Festival. Mirella Pascual won the prize for Best Actress.

Kelly Overton and Judson Pearce Morgan, who both hail from the NY acting community, join forces on The Collective for their filmmaking debut. Kelly was born in 1978 in New Jersey, USA and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NY. As an actress she has been seen in such films as The Ring 2, Stephen King`s Desperation, and Tekken, as well as starring opposite Kathleen Turner and Jason Biggs in The Graduate on Broadway. Judson, who was also seen in the same play, was born in Greenville, Illinois, USA in 1974 and went to Wheaton College and UMKC for a Masters in Acting and Directing, class of 2000. He directed The Wager in 2007.

Julia Bacha Co-script writer and editor of the documentary Control Room (2004), on Al Jazeera, the Arab television broadcasters. Born in Brazil, she went to New York in 1998 to study history and politics at Columbia University. In the course of her studies, she became interested in documenting life in the Amazon and in the mountains of Cuba and Jamaica. She was assistant to Bruno Barreto in O Casamento de Romeu e Julieta (2005). Ronit Avni Founder and director of Just Vision, a non-profit organization endeavoring to persuade Palestinians and Israelis to live in peace. She has co-produced short films on video in collaboration with filmmakers from Senegal, the United States, and Brazil working for Peter Gabriel´s human rights organization Witness. She wrote and produced a documentary, Rise, with the Afghanistan Revolutionary Women´s Association, awarded prizes in festivals in South Korea and Canada. Encounter Point was awarded the Prize for Best Documentary at the San Francisco Festival.

Born in Mexico City in 1972. He studied in the University Center for Cinematographic Studies, where he specialized in script and directing, and where he made several short fiction films. A Thousand Clouds of Peace Fence the Sky, Love, Your Being Love Will Never End, his first feature, won the Teddy Bear, the prize for the best gay feature at the Berlin Festival.

Julio Medem nasceu em 21 de outubro de 1958 em San Sebastian, Espanha. Escreveu sobre cinema para publicações como Cinema 2002, Casablanca e o diário La Voz de Euskadi. Trabalhou como montador e assistente de direção. Realizou os curtas Patas en La Cabeza (1985) e Las Seis en Punta (1987). Também dirigiu o média-metragem El Diario Vasco (1989). Estreou no longa-metragem em 1992, com Vacas e fez em seguida O Esquilo Vermelho (1993), ambos selecionados para a 17ª Mostra.

Julian Pörksen
Born in Germany in 1985. He studied history and philosophy in Berlin and dramaturgy in Leipzig. He published two books: one of them, Wir Wollen Plankton Sein, was also released as a theater play of the same name, in 2017. Pörksen is the director of the short movie Sometimes We Sit and Think and Sometimes We Just Sit (2012). Whatever Happens Next is his first feature film.

Julian Radlmaier

Born in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1984. He studied film and history of art in Berlin and Paris, before taking a degree in directing at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin. Radlmaier worked as a translator, and has worked as an assistant director for Werner Schroeter. His first feature, Self-criticism of a Bourgeois Dog (2017), was presented at Rotterdam and Berlin film festivals. Bloodsuckers - A Marxist Vampire Comedy is his second feature film.

JULIAN ROMAN PÖLSLER
Born in Austria. He studied directing and production at the Vienna Film Academy as well as directing and dramatic arts at the Max Reinhardt Seminar, also in Vienna. He has worked as assistant director to Austrian filmmaker and writer Axel Corti. Since 1990, Pölsler has been directing for the opera and making TV movies such as Himmel Polt und Hölle (2002), Bella Block (2007) and Anna und der Prinz (2009). He holds a teaching position at the Konservatorium of The City of Vienna and at the Vienna University of Technology.

Nasceu em 1951, pintor e escultor, participou de diversas mostras coletivas, a partir de 1976. Sua primeira individual foi em 1979, na Mary Boone Gallery. Schnabel tem obras nos acervos dos mais importantes museus do mundo. Em 1989 deu início a sua colaboração com o pintor Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988). O longa Basquiat (1996), exibido pela 20ª Mostra, é a cinebiografia de seu antigo colega (morto por overdose de opiáceos e cocaína aos 27 anos) e foi sua primeira experiência no cinema.

Born in Campinas, Brazil, in 1981, and studied film at the University of São Paulo. She integrates the collective Filmes do Caixote. Juliana directed the shorts Dressed (2008), To Sleep Quietly (2012) and Doppelgänger (2013), and the feature Necropolis Symphony (2014, 38th Mostra). Along with Marco Dutra, she made short movies such as The White Sheet (2004) and A Stem (2007), and the feature film Hard Labor (2011).

She was born in 1970 in Bologna, Italy, and is filmmaker Costa-Gavra’s daughter. After graduate studies in Literature and Law, she turned to Cinema. She started as an assistant director in Italy and France with commercials, television movies and feature films. She worked with directors as diverse as Robert Enrico, Claire Devers and Jacques Nolot. In 1998, she directed a short-film Oh les Beaux Dimanches!. In 2000, she directed her first documentary, From Dawn to Night: Songs by Moroccan Women. Her second non-fiction film was The Pirate, the Wizard, the Thief and the Children (2002). She completed other documentaries for Arte and France 5. Blame It on Fidel is her first feature film.

She was born in 1952 in Newton, Massachusetts (USA) and studied at Ohio’s famed Oberlin College. A director of numerous plays and operas, she won a Tony award in 1998 for directing the Broadway production “The Lion King”. She made her film directing debut with the TV drama Fool’s Fire (1992), adapted from an Edgar Allan Poe’s story. Her feature films are Titus (1999), after William Shakespeare’s play, and Frida (2002).

Born in Lille in 1896, Julien Duvivier was a theatre actor before turning to the cinema at the end of the First World War. After a period as assistant to Louis Feuillade and Marcel L’Herbier, Duvivier directed his own first film, Haceldama ou Le prix du sang, in 1919. During a long and prolific career, Duvivier made more than sixty films, and colaborated in many others. In addition to his work in France where he was reknowned for his commercial success, his efficacity and his technical prowess, he worked in the USA (particularly during a period of exile in the Second World War), in Canada, in England, in Belgium and in Germany. OCTUOR DE FRANCE The BNP Paribas Brazil Foundation, the Accor Group and Fnac present Octuor de France. Formed in 1979 by clarinettist Jean-Louis Sajot, the Octuor de France has always given priority to the promotion of music for the clarinet from the 18th century to the present day. The ensemble aims to have the widest possible repertoire and its name testifies to its desire to promote French music beyond its frontiers by means of regular overseas tours. The musicians of the Octuor de France perform in formations from duet to octet, with or without piano. They propose a vast repertoire of classical, romantic and contemporary works but also give their public the opportunity to rediscover forgotten or rarely played works. Furthermore, Octuor de France commissions scores from present day composers to encourage the creation of new works. The Octuor de France also participates in the revival of the silent movie by giving « concert-projections » with scores specially written for the Octuor de France. The Octuor de France has recorded the works of Antonin Reicha, Carl-Maria von Weber, Franz Schubert, Wolgang-Amadeus Mozart, Johannes Brahms, Joseph Haydn, Jean Françaix and Marcel Landowski. In the field of the silent cinema they have recorded the music for The Man Who Laughs written for the Octuor de France by the Canadian composer, Gabriel Thibaudeau, to accompany Paul Leni’s 1928 film based on Victor Hugo’s famous novel, L’homme qui rit, and also their first DVD, Visages d’Enfants by Jacques Feyder (1925) with music written for the Octuor de France by the Italian composer, Antonio Coppola, recorded in October 2004. In the 32th Mostra, o Octour de France if live present in the screenings of The Man Who Laugh’s and other classic movie mute, the drama Poil of Carrot, masterpiece of director Julien Duvivier, from 1925. Born in 1959 in Beauharnois, Quebec, Mr. Thibaudeau studied piano at the Vincent d’Indy Music School and composition at the Music Faculty of Montreal University. He also participated in summer schools at the Orford Arts Center where he worked on composition with Iannis Xenakis. As permanent pianist at the Quebec Film Library since 1988, and recognised as the Canadian specialist in the accompanying of silent movies, he has been invited since 1991 to the Gionarte del Cinema Muto, in Pordenone and since 1992 to the festival Il Cinema Ritrovato, in Bologna, Italy. Since 1993, among other works for the silent cinema, he has composed a quintet for brass and percussion for the film Straight Shooting (1971), a concerto for piano and chamber orchestra for the film The Fall of the House of Usher, a sextet for the film Foolish Wives, and a Requiem for soprano and piano for the film The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. In association with the Octuor de France he has composed the music to accompany The Man who Laughs, Au Bonheur des Dames, The Iron Mask and Poil de Carotte, as well as adapting for the Octuor de France his orchestral score for The Phantom of the Opera.

Born in France in 1978. He earned a master’s degree in history from the University of Paris-Nanterre and has worked at the French Sports Institute (INSEP) for 15 years. Faraut made short films like Perspectives Rugbystiques (2007), Une Seule Fois (2009) and Phrases d’Armes (2010), in addition to the full-length documentaries Regard Neuf sur Olympia 52 (2013) and John McEnroe: In the Realm of Perfection (2018, 42nd Mostra).

Born in 1953, in England, he became one of the most famous makers of videoclips, having also made various films, documentaries, amongst which the most outstanding is Absolute Beginners, already shown in the Mostra. He studied Architecture and History at Kings College, Cambridge, and he later attended the National Film School, in London. His first film as a director, in 1979, was The Great Rock`n`Roll Swindle. He specialized in films and musical documentaries. He directed several videoclips for artists such as Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Sade, and the Rolling Stones, among others.

Iniciou sua carreira como fotógrafo, trabalho que o projetou mundialmente. Em 1982, publicou um livro de fotografia que satirizava os círculos políticos. Suas fotos foram exibidas em vários museus da Europa. Ainda nos anos 80, começou a trabalhar como repórter da rádio BRTN, mas em pouco tempo estava novamente trabalhando com imagens, como diretor de programas jornalísticos para a TV. Aos 51 anos, Vrebos estréia no cinema com O Baile de Máscaras.

Born in São Paulo in 1941, he is a director, actor and producer. In 1964, he started his career at the Teatro da Oficina and Arena. He worked as Geraldo Sarno’s assistant in the documentary Viramundo (1965), both as an actor and producer in Rogério Sganzerla’s The Red Light Bandit (1968), and directed the film Longo Caminho da Morte (1974), selected for the Locarno Film Festival, which he couldn’t attend because of the censorship at the time. He was in the cast of, among others, Carlos Reichenbach’s Filme Demência (1986), and Guilherme de Almeida Prado’s A Dama do Cine Shanghai (1988). He is the creator of film exhibitions such as Cinema de Invenção and Cinema Negro. More recently, he directed Vinte Anos Sem Gonzaquinha, short made for the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon.

His films of action and comedy are full of outcasts and losers, characteristics that brought acknowledgement from the critics. His films include: Iron Fist (1990), Checkmate (1991), Tokarev (1994), Boxer Joe (1995), Billiken (1996), Battered Angels (1997), and Goofball (1998).

Nasceu em Tóquio em 1932. Estudou Literatura Francesa na Universidade de Tóquio até 56. Em 62, depois de alguma experiência como assistente de direção na Toei, passa a dirigir seus próprios filmes, tornando-se particularmente famoso na China. Lá é conhecido como `cineasta do fim do mundo` pelos filmes que rodou no Pólo Norte e no Monte Everest. Seus principais filmes: "The Bullet Train"(75), "Hot Pursuit"(76), "The Go Masters"(82), Kukai (84), "Love in the Wilderness"(86) e "Dun Huang"(88).

He created the group of documentarists Canal 03 and, between 1998 and 2005, he was a member of the audiovisual group Telefone Colorido Cinema Vídeo, where he codirected the short film Resgate Cultural. In 2004, he made the short Copo de Leite and co-directed the medium length Shemberguianas. He has also directed the feature Paranã-Puca - Onde o mar se arrebenta (2010). Capela is the cinematographer of the project As Vozes do Araguaia (2010). He has also worked in the executive production of Bruno Safadi’s Meu Nome é Dindi (2008), as well as in the production of the documentary Belair (2009).

It has been almost 15 years since the countries declared their independence from one another, but Slovakia born director Juraj Jakubisko’s personality, work and focus are all marked by the dual cultural identity of the former Czechoslovakia. Before becoming a filmmaker, Jakubisko taught still photography at a school in Bratislava. In 1960 he moved to Prague and studied at FAMU. At age 28 Jakubisko directed his first feature film, Crucial Years (Kristove roky, 1967). That was followed by Deserters and Pilgrims (1968). The short-story triptych received the medal for young artists (Little Lion) at the Venice International Film Festival. During the communist clampdown that followed, Jakubisko’s work faced heavy censorship. Banned from feature film making for 15 years, his short films and commercials continued to bring forbidden recognition. But Jakubisko seized an opportunity to speak out with his 1979 Build a House, Plant a Tree. The resulting success at the film festival in Amsterdam placed the film on a list of prohibited works and meant another embargo on further activities for the director, but he continued to work for cinema and TV.

JURANDIR MÜLLER E KIKO GOIFMAN
Kiko Goifman Kiko Goifman was born in Belo Horizonte in 1986. He graduated as an anthropologist at UFMG and did his masters in multimedia at Unicamp. He got a scholarship at the Fundação Vitae in 1998, studying film and video to research for the documentary Dense Death. In 2003 he did 33, a documentary like film investigation with noir esthetics. Jurandir Müller Jurandir Müller was born in São Paulo in 1960. He’s an artist and documentarist and has been realizing several different support projects. He created de production company PaleoTV, which he co-directs with Kiko Goifman. The company is dedicated to several cultural projects in film and video. Also with Kiko Goifman, he participated in the 24º and 25º International São Paulo Bienale, at the Web Art nucleus

Born in 1985, Pavlović graduated at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb, Croatia. He participated in workshops in festivals, such as Berlin and Sarajevo festivals, and directed a few short films, like Picnic (2015). Mater is his first feature.

JURI RECHINSKY
Born in Turkmenistan in 1986. He was raised in Kiev, Ukraine, where he studied film. Nowadays, he lives in Vienna, Austria. Rechinsky worked as an editor for commercials, short and feature films. He made several short movies and made his debut in a feature direction with the documentary Sickfuckpeople (2013). Ugly is his first fictional feature film.

Born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1980. He studied film direction at the Zurich University of the Arts. Steinhart directed short movies such as Where Is Max? (2008) and Bon Appetit (2007). Let the Old Folks Die is his first feature film.

Juris Kursietis
Born in Latvia in 1983. He has a master’s degree in film directing. At the age of 20, Kursietis started working as a foreign correspondent for the Latvian television. He made his debut as a director with the short movie The Bicycle Story (2007). In 2014, he directed his first feature film, Modris. Oleg is his second feature.

Justin Kurzel
Justin Kurzel
Born in Gawler, Australia, in 1974, Kurzel studied film directing at the Victorian College of the Arts, where he wrote and directed the short film Blue Tongue (2005). He is the director of the features Snowtown (2011), Special Mention at the Critics’ Week at Cannes Film Festival, Macbeth (2015) and Assassin’s Creed (2016).

Was born in State College, Pennsylvania, USA. Currently lives in Los Angeles. He studied Theatre Arts and Film at Cornell University. Completed his Master’s degree in directing at UCLA Film School; his thesis short film, The Replacement Child (2007), was awarded with two student Emmys. Girlfriend is his feature directorial debut.

He is a director and screenwriter based in St. John`s, Newfoundland, Canada. He directed the short films The Audience (2001), Face Machine (2006), Heartless Disappearance Into Labrador Seas (2008), the medium-length film Ashore (2002) and the feature film Down to the Dirt (2008). Hold Fast is his second feature film.

Born in the United Kingdom. After earning a degree from Cambridge University, he found a career in journalism. He settled in Barcelona during the 1990s and has directed a string of feature-length documentaries including FC Barcelona Confidential (2005), Photographing the Exodus (2007), The Madrid Connection (2007), Last White Man Standing (2010), Convict the Judge (2011) and Life from Others (2012). I Will Be Murdered is his seventh feature film.

JUSTINE SHAPIRO
Justine Shapiro was born in South Africa and grew up in Berkeley, California. She is presenter and one of the script writers for the prize-winning series of adventures Lonely Planet and has traveled extensively in over 40 countries. B.Z. Goldberg was born in Boston, but grew up near Jerusalem. Fluent in Hebrew and in Arabic, he has become an expert in viable alternatives and solutions for the conflict in the Middle East. Carlos Bolado became known as editor of Like Water for Chocolate (1992), by Alfonso Arau, in addition to 12 Mexican films, and this film Promises. In 1993, he directed his first short film Rites. He made Under California: The Limit of Time, his first fiction feature in 1999.

Born in Fécamp, France, in 1978. Justine studied at the National School of Fine Arts, in Paris. She directed documentaries and two feature films, Age of Panic (2013) and In Bed with Victoria (2016), both screened at Cannes Film Festival.

A diretora Jutta Brückner nasceu em Dusseldorf e estudou Ciências Políticas, Filosofia e História em Berlim, Paris e Munique. Depois de formada, começou a escrever roteiros, peças para rádio-teatro, ensaios e críticas sobre cinema. Realizou seu primeiro filme, Tue Recht und Scheue Niemand em 1975. Desde 1985, é professora universitária em Berlim.

Nasceu em 1933. É filho do ator Mansaku Itami. Começou sua carreira como ator em filmes como "55 Days in Peking", "Lord Jim" e "I am a Cat". Também atua na televisão e é ensaísta. Seu primeiro longa-metragem foi "The Funeral"(seleção da 9ª Mostra), um sucesso de crítica e de público. Dirigiu ainda "Tampopo"(86, 11ª Mostra), "A Taxing Woman"(87, 12ª Mostra), "A Taxing Woman`s Return"(88) , "A-Ge-Man"(90) e "The Gentle Art of Japanese Extortion"(92, 17ª Mostra).

Estudou na Academia Real de Artes de Copenhague. É pintora. Como cineasta, profissão que aprendeu de forma autodidata, sempre desenvolveu técnicas narrativas não ortodoxas e um estilo bastante pessoal. O filme "Isolda", um dos seis longas - metragens que dirigiu, projetou-a para o público e crítica em vários países. Já publicou um romance e livros de desenho e fotografia. Seus últimos filmes têm sido comparados com os de Andrei Tarkovski.
