Y. DAVID CHUNG
Y. David Chung - He was born in Germany, 1959. Chung began his career collaborating as an artist on documentary films. His credits include Surveillance, No Place to Hide (HBO), American Journey (PBS), Gardens of Paradise (PBS), The Forgotten People (PBS), Soldiers in Hiding (HBO) and Peace on Borrowed Time (ABC). He directed Turtle Boat Head. Chung is associate professor with the School of Art and Design and the Korean Studies Program at the University of Michigan. Matt Dibble - He was born in USA, in 1959, has worked for over 20 years as a documentary filmmaker. His credits include public television specials: The Mystery of Chaco Canyon (co-writer, editor), Rising Waters: Global Warming and Fate of the South Pacific Islands (editor), Forsaken Cries: the Story of Rwanda (editor), and Expedition Alerce: Lost Forest of the Andes (camera, editor). He also creates video media for museum exhibitions and has just completed a four screen installation for the new Holocaust and Human Rights Center in Augusta, Maine, USA.

YAHYA ALABDALLA
Born in 1978 in Libya and raised in Saudi Arabia. He studied literature and film at the Eicar Cinema School in Paris. He wrote and directed eight short films, including Six Minutes (2004), A Man in a Cup (2006), Pummelo (2008), which was co-written and directed with Aseel Amnsour; and SMS (2009). The Last Friday, his first feature, was selected for the Berlin Film Festival.

Born in Lille, France, in 1957. She is one of the first French directors and producers of Algerian origins. She dedicates her work to portrait the life, not often easy, of African immigrants of Arabian origins in France, like in documentaries as Memories of Immigrants ( 1998) and The Maghrebian Heritage (1998). In 2001, her first feature film, Inch’Allah Sunday, won several awards.

Born in 1973 in Hong Kong. He graduated from the local Academy of Performing Arts with a short film Snap-Shots, awarded the prize for best short film at the Hong Kong Short Film and Video Festival, in 1998. He was assistant director to Cha Chuen-yi in Perfect Sex, Perfect Life and assistant script writer for the film In The Mood for Love by Wong Kar-Wai. Brother, his first feature, was awarded the Fipresci prize at the Hong Kong International Film Festival.

Born in 1946, in France, he began a career at the end of the sixties as a film maker. As from 1971, he collaborated with some of the great French film makers such as François Truffaut, Claire Denis, and Cédric Kahn. He directed his first film in 1974 with a short film La Plus Forte. In 1983, he made a documentary for TV Les Amoureux du Cinéma. The Land of the Singing Dog is his first feature.

Yann Le Gal - Directed the short film Le Griselet (1992), and has been screenwriter for such films as Marie-Antoinette, by Alain Brunart, Josephine, by Jean-Marc Vanvoort, A La Recherche de Largo Winch, by Yves Legrain-Crist, and Les Larmes du Petit Prince by Erwan Legal. Isild Le Besco - Directed the awarded Demi-Tarif (2003) and her first feature film is Charly (2007). She is also an actress in films such as À Tout de Suite (2004), Camping Sauvage (2005) and Backstage (2005). Joana Hadjithomas e Khalil Joreige - Two young Lebanese producers who have being working together for many years, in Paris and in Beirut. Graduated in Cinema, they wrote e directed a several short-films, among them The Agony of the Feet, 333 Sycamore and Faute d`Identités. Around the Pink House is their first feature-length film (23th Mostra). They directed also the fiction film A Perfect Day (2005). Ismaël Ferroukhi - Born in Kenitra, Morocco. After directing his first short film, the awarded L`Exposé, in 1993, he co-wrote the script for Trop de Bonheur (19th Mostra), by Cédric Kahn, in 1994. He worked again with Kahn in Zero Guilt (1996) and L’Avion (2005). Le Grand Voyage is his first feature and has been shown at the 29th Mostra. Corinne Garfin - She directed the awarded short films Les Vagabonds (1996), Anissa (1998), La Collection de Judicael (2003), and Seul (2005), and also the documentaries L’Ordre Vert and Bakary et les Autres. Safy Nebbou - He directed the awarded short films Bertzea (2002) and Lepokoa (2003), and his first feature film is The Girafe’s Neck (2004).

Born in Henan Province in 1976. Graduated from Xindu Art School, Sichuan Province. Animation major in the ShenZhen University. Worked as a designer for advertising and animation for six years. Worked as a supervisor on making digital films for one year and produced nearly 200 digital films. Meanwhile, in the past few years, using Yu Buting as a pseudonym published lots of comments on films in newspapers, magazines and on the internet. With friends cooperated and made two series of films in 2005.

Wrote, produced, directed and edited several shorts. Lamb, his first feature film, was presented at the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival.

YARIV MOZER
He graduated from Tel Aviv University. He directed the short films Passiflora Waltz (2003) and Bedtime Stories (2010), among others. He also directed the documentary films My First War (2008), There Must Be another Way (2009) and The Invisible Men (2012). He was head of the production department at Jerusalem’s Sam Spiegel Film School. Snails in the Rain is his fiction feature debut.

Graduated in 1994 in physics and finance from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Over the last five years, he devoted himself to the history of art and to cinema. After a long period producing a documentary on football, Zilberman devoted the last four years to producing Watermarks, the story for which he researched, wrote, directed, and produced. The film was awarded the prizes for best documentary at the Boston Jewish Festival, at the Jerusalem Film Festival, and at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1989. She studied film at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). She directed short films like Vögel Explodieren Nicht (2012), Auf Ewig Dein (2014) and Tüüfel (2015). In addition to directing, she works as an editor and editorial assistant. Periphery is her first feature.

YASUJIRO OZU
Born in Tokyo, 1903. In 1922, he got a job at Shochiku Studios and later directed his first film, Sword of Penitence (1927). Among his first films, I Graduated But... (1930) and Tokyo Chorus (1931, 27th Mostra) stand out. During World War II, he was imprisoned and sentenced to forced labor by the British. He eventually returned to filmmaking and directed Late Spring (1949), regarded in Japan as a masterpiece. The stand-out films that make up the latter half of his filmography are Early Summer (1951), Tokyo Story (1953), The Equinox Flower (1958), and Floating Weeds (1959). His last films – Good Morning (1959), Late Autumn (1960), The End of Summer (1961) and An Autumn Afternoon (1962) – were all screened during the 27th Mostra. Ozu died in 1963, on the day he would have turned 60, leaving behind 53 films.

Born in Hong Kong, in 1966. He majored in arts in Hong Kong and, in 1990, moved to New York, where he completed his studies. His short films and videos were awarded prizes such as Image Forum in Japan, the Cindy Film Competition in the U.S., and the German Video Art Prize. Is There Anything Specific You Want Me To Tell You About? (1990) was his first film, followed by Flow (1993), The Ideal Na(rra)tion (1993), Video Letters 1-3 (1993), June 30, 1997 (1997), I’m Starving (1999), and Finding Oneself (2001), among others. Ho Yuk – Let`s Love Hong Kong is his first feature.

Chinês, 37 anos. Formou-se em direção pela Escola de Cinema de Pequim em 1986. Em 1988, escreveu o roteiro para o filme Half Sea Water, Half Flames. Dois anos mais tarde, dirigiu A Long Deep Breath. De 1990 a 1994, foi o diretor-geral da empresa Shenzhen Xianke Amusement Communication. Cerejas Vermelhas recupera os testemunhos ouvidos de seu pai e avô sobre os horrores da II Guerra. Quando resolveu produzir um filme sobre o período, entrevistou dezenas de outras pessoas. Como não há agentes profissionais na China, ele selecionou pessoalmente os protagonistas, dois estreantes, entre centenas de candidatos. Cerejas Vermelhas foi a maior bilheteria da história da China.

After graduating from Taiwan`s Cheng-chi University with a degree in western literature, Yee Chih-yen entered the UCLA`s film production program in theater arts.His student works have won recognition, winning the 1987 Golden crown for Best Short Film, and was nominated for the Samuel Goldwyn script competition. Graduating in 1988, Yee returned to Taiwan to work in advertising industry. His works have won the China Times Commercial Awards, and Yee became a well-known director of commercials. Beside directing for television and the cinema, he also functioned as a producer, scriptwriter and critic, and has lectured on films. in a ten-year period, Yee has directed many TV dramas and made his movie debut with LONELY HEARTS CLUB in 1995, a film about problems of youth and homosexuality. BLUE GATE CROSSING is his second film.

Nasceu em 1957, em Hong Kong. Trabalhou como ator no Shaw Brothers Studio em mais de 40 filmes, a maior parte no gênero `Kung-Fu`, dirigida pelo veterano cineasta Chu Yuan. Seu primeiro filme foi The Lunatics (86), sobre um grupo de pacientes com problemas mentais. Dirigiu em seguida People`s Hero (87), baseado no filme Um Dia de Cão, de Sidney Lumet. Realizou ainda Bachelor`s Swan Song (89), um filme realista sobre um casal que é pressionado a se casar. C`Est La Vie, Mon Chéri marca o seu retorno à direção depois de quatro anos.

Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi Yervant Gianikian was born in 1944 and studied architecture in Venice. Angela Ricci Lucchi was born in Italy and studied fine arts in Austria with expressionist painter Oskar Kokoschka. They live in Milan and have worked in cinema since the 1970s. They began by collecting films and by giving them an artistic makeover re-edited, tinted, or shaded. They made Karagoez catalogo 9,5 (1981), Dal Polo All`equatore (1986), Prigioneri della Guerra (1995), Su Tutte le Vette é Pace (1998), and Inventario Balcanico (2001).

Nasceu em 1960, em Sarikamis, Turquia. Estudou arquitetura e trabalhou como jornalista antes de realizar quatro curtas e o longa The Trace, em 1994, premiado como melhor filme turco no Festival de Cinema de Istambul. Jornada para o Sol é seu segundo longa e ganhou no Festival de Berlim/99 o Prêmio Blue Angel para Melhor Filme Europeu e o Prêmio da Paz.

After Making several award-winning shorts in Turkey, Yesim Ustaoglu made her feature film debut with 1994’s The Trace. The film was presented at numerous international festivals, including Moscow and Gotenburg. Yesim Ustaoglu received international recognition for her 1999 film Journey to the Sun (23th Mostra) received the Blue Angel Award (Best European Film) and the Peace Prize and swept the Istanbul Festival by winning Best Film, Best Director and the Audience Award. Waiting for the Cloudes (29th Mostra) was awarded NHK Sundance-International Filmmaker’s award. Pandora’s Box won the San Sebastian Film Festival 2008.

Born in Turkey in 1937, he was an actor, novelist and director known for having a harsh relationship with the country’s government authorities. He used the film medium to address important social problems. His films include Hope (1970), Elegy (1974) and The Herd (1978). While in prison, he directed his most famous film, Yol (1982, 6th Mostra), which won the Palme d’Or in Cannes, by sending shooting instructions to his assistant and editing it after he escaped to Paris. He died in 1984 after the release of his final film, The Wall (1983).

Nasceu em Wakayama, em 1935. Formou-se em Literatura em 54, enquanto sua paixão pelo cinema aumentava. Em 58 ingressou na produtora Iwanami e tornou-se assistente de direção de Susumu Hani e Kazuo Kuriki. O primeiro curta que dirige é "Higashi" (Um Rosto), em 63. O primeiro longa, "Nippon Yokaiden: Satori"(Despertar Espiritual), é de 73. Desde 79 a temática dos seus filmes está centrada no estilo de vida das mulheres do Japão contemporâneo, destacando-se "Love Letter", "Manon", "The Rape" e "Incarnation".

A Japanese film maker of Korean origin, born in 1949. He was assistant director to Nagisa Oshima and to Toru Murakawa. He became a film maker in 1983, with the film Jukkai no Mosukito, presented in the Critics Week at the Venice Film Festival. He achieved renown in 1993 when his film All Under the Moon was the first of his work to broach the problems of integration of Koreans in Japan. Pig`s Retribution (1999) was awarded a prize at Locarno. His more recent films are Doing Time (2002) and Quill (2004). He occasionally performs as an actor as in the film Taboo (1999) by Nagisa Oshima.

Born in Osaka, Japan in 1931. He studied law in Tokyo before joining Shochiku. He is famous for working on all 48 films of the Tora-San series, one of the longest-running movie series in cinematographic history. His film Twilight Samurai (2002), nominated for the best foreign film Oscar, was followed by two other samurai films: The Hidden Blade (2004) and Love and Honor (2006). Mostra presented his films About her Brother (2010), Kyoto Story (2010) and Tokyo Family (2013), reinterpretation of Yasujiro Ozu’s cult movie Tokyo Story (1953).

He covered documentary stories about Bedouins, Alawis, Roman gypsies and other cultural groups under threat of extinction. Keepers of Eden is his first long-length documentary.

Yousry Nasrallah was born in Cairo in 1952. He majored in economics and political science in The University of Cairo, and cinema in Cairo`s Film Institute. In 1978 he left for Lebanon, where he became a journalist and film critic. He worked as assistant director and producer for Volker Schlöndorff and Youssef Chahine. In 1987, he wrote and made his first film, Vols d`été, which was coproduced by Chahine. He directed, among others, Mercedes (1993), the documentary About Boys, Girls and the Headscarf (1995) and The City (1999), which won the special jury prize at the Locarno festival.

É respeitado como um dos principais cineastas egípcios e sua filmografia registra clássicos para o cinema mundial como "El Ard" ( "A Terra", 69), "Al Ekhtiar" ("A Escolha", 70) e "Iskindiria...Leh?" ("Alexandria, porquê?, 78). "O Sexto Dia" registra a última aparição no cinema da atriz e cantora Dalila, que se suicidou em 1987.
